East Bank Development Strategy

The East Bank is steeped in industrial history. During the 19th and 20th centuries, heavy industries such as shipbuilding and rope works dominated the area, in particular the Howden Sirocco Works, which forms a significant portion of the 50 acres of potential development land on the east bank of the Lagan. The regeneration of this area is a key project within the City Centre Regeneration and Investment Strategy.

We’ve set out a long-term vision for East Bank in our East Bank Development Strategy document. Our vision is that by 2030, this part of the city will be fully woven into the fabric of the city centre. It will be lively, diverse, accessible and well connected to the city core, the River Lagan, Titanic Quarter and surrounding communities; providing places to live, work and socialise.

The spatial framework of the strategy is based upon five mutually supporting themes, underpinned by the need to protect the environment, promote sustainable development, encourage energy-efficient design, sustainable urban drainage and low carbon initiatives.

The themes are:

• encourage sustainable development and respect the natural and historic environment
• facilitate the optimum development of key sites
• energise the River Lagan corridor
• create a connected and legible East Bank
• make streets and spaces for people.
