Physical investment
The Lagan Gateway project includes structural improvements and development works at Stranmillis including:
The total investment in the project is approximately £4.8 million, with almost 50 percent of this coming from our Belfast Investment Fund.
Other partners are Ulster Garden Villages, Department for Communities, Department for Infrastructure Rivers and the Lagan Navigation Trust.
Work continues on site with additional hygiene and social distancing measures in place to keep workers and the public safe during the COVID-19 pandemic in line with industry health and safety guidance.
On the Stranmillis side of the river, work to support the bridge structure has been completed. This is now fully open for use and will be planted out later in the season.
On the Annadale side the concrete works to the new lock is complete. The top of the walls can be seen from the towpath and this will form the line of the new canal to let boats past the weir.
The sheet piling to form the new canal upstream of the lock is due to commence Tuesday 28 July for the rest of that week.
Concrete has been poured to the central pier for the bridge and this pier has been completed. The next pier will be poured next leaving just the abutment on the Annadale side to be completed.
Mini piling to the Annadale abutment will started week starting 27 July and will only take a couple of days. This will then be followed by the construction of the abutment, backfilling and rebuilding of the slope
Due to coronavirus (COVID-19), the contractor’s office is closed. They are unable to publish and deliver the newsletter for local residents. The newsletter will resume when the office reopens. Until then, construction updates will be published on this web page.

The Lagan Gateway project is one of the catalyst projects identified within the wider Lagan Corridor area, which aims to create opportunities for tourism, employment, community engagement and economic growth along the river.
The overall project is due to be completed by spring 2021.
