Recycling the right way

To support you with your recycling, here are some top tips to remember.

Let’s get it right – together!

  • Sort and rinse

Take five minutes to sort your recycling out.

Check what to put in each bin or box and use this list if you’re unsure about something.

Always give items a quick rinse under the tap to remove any residue.

Sticky soup or baked bean cans can leak onto paper or card, meaning the items can’t be recycled and your efforts go to waste!

  • Use your compost (brown) bin or green food waste caddy

All food waste (except liquids) can be recycled in your compost (brown) bin or green food waste caddy, depending on where you live in Belfast.

If you have a compost (brown) bin, you can also use it up for takeaway pizza boxes (rip them up, make sure all food is removed), along with shredded paper, napkins and kitchen roll.

  • Common culprits

Takeaway coffee cups, nappies, cling film and bubble wrap cannot be recycled.

Plastic bags and mixed rubbish can’t be recycled either.

All these items need to go in your household (black) bin instead.

  • Other ways to recycle

There are lots of other things that can be recycled, even if they don’t fit in your bin or box!

Our recycling centres accept a wide range of everyday items which are passed on for reuse or resale or sent on for recycling so their materials can be reused again and again.

These include small electrical items, white goods, hard plastics and lots more.

Our amenity sites also accept a smaller range of items.

If you can’t recycle glass in your recycling collection, you can take glass bottles and jars to bottle banks instead.

Old clothes and other textiles can also be recycled at many of these sites too – but you can also try swapping with friends, donating to charity stores or selling online instead too.

We also run a wide range of recycling initiatives across Belfast, working with groups and organisations to recycle items like old laptops, spectacles and more.
