Belfast is now recycling 41 per cent of our waste.
That’s 41 per cent of everyday rubbish no longer going to landfill – instead, it is being recycled and reused again and again, creating jobs locally, saving important resources and reducing harmful carbon emissions.
Well done everyone – the choices you make everyday are really making a difference.
All that sorting, rinsing and crushing, putting out your bin at night or early in the morning, going the extra mile to check whether something can be recycled – thank you for your efforts.
Let’s keep going.

By recycling, you’re supporting our city to be more sustainable – and, if you don’t, now’s the time to start!
Our Be Bincredible Belfast! campaign is all about encouraging you to do what you can to recycle more at home – supporting you to sort items correctly, sharing tips to save space in your bins and reminding you what can be recycled and which bin to use.
We want to make recycling part of everyday life for everyone - because, by recycling more, we all benefit.
Whether it’s creating more space in your household waste bin, passing on things you no longer need to a new home or creating opportunities for businesses and social enterprises to turn old items into new products, recycling works.
Look out for information about our campaign on our social media channels, as well as local radio and advertisements across the city during autumn 2023.
Follow us on Facebook (@belfastcitycouncil), X (Twitter) (@belfastcc) and Instagram (@belfastcitycouncil).
The winter edition of our City Matters magazine – distributed to households from November 2023 - will have a recycling guide to keep handy at home.
Our team will also be visiting schools in early 2024 to highlight the importance of recycling to younger children and families with toolkits, interactive games and roadshows, supporting good habits from early on.
We have information to help you recycle at home:
We run dedicated schemes in Belfast to reduce waste and deliver social and environmental benefits to our residents.
Visit our recycling initiatives section for more details, along with more about our schools programme and info on how your recycling is supporting our city through jobs, opportunities and reduced waste.
If you have a question about recycling or aren’t sure about a particular item, get in touch with our team at recycling@belfastcity.gov.uk
