  • History of The Bobbin

During a major refurbishment of City Hall in 2009 Belfast City Council sought the advice of its residents to name a new coffee shop. More than 1400 people voted in an online poll and the winning name was ‘The Bobbin’. The popular eatery is named after the city’s once-thriving linen industry, a catalyst for our industrial revolution in the 1820s. A bobbin is a spindle or cylinder on which yarn or thread is wound. Bobbins were also used on a larger scale in other industries such as ropemaking.

  • Social Enterprise Café

The coffee shop is managed by Loaf Catering and Cafes (link opens in new window) providing training and work experience places for people with a learning disability, autism or Asperger’s. All profits go to parent organisation, NOW Group, a social enterprise supporting people with learning difficulties and autism into jobs with a future.
