Educational initiatives

  • About our educational initiatives

We run a range of anti-litter events to help your school or community group reach its environmental goals. They're fun, free and linked to the NI Curriculum.

If you'd like to book one of our free anti-litter workshops, please call us on 028 9032 0202 ext 5377 or email catcleansing@belfastcity.gov.uk.

  • Nursery

We offer a range of short stories to help educate and entertain pupils about litter and the impact it has on the world around them. You can choose from:

    • Sammy the squirrel,
    • Captain Cleanup and the case of the mystery litter dropper and
    • Getting tidy with a little help from my friends.

These sessions last about 30 minutes.

During December, we run our Environmental Litter Friend (ELF), which is a Christmas themed story session. Places are available to book from September and are allocated on a first come, first served basis.

To book a visit from the ELF to your nursery school email catcleansing@belfastcity.gov.uk or call 02890 320 202 extension 5379.

  • Foundation Stage

We offer a short talk about litter and its impact on our local environment accompanied by a short story to reinforce the anti-litter message. You can choose from:

    • Sophie’s story (about the impact litter can have on our marine wildlife),
    • Captain Cleanup and the case of the mystery litter dropper and
    • Getting tidy with a little help from my friends.

These sessions last approximately 40 minutes.

  • Primary (Key stage 1 and 2)

Our key stage 1 and 2 workshops includes short video clips, games, discussions and competitions. Each session normally lasts 1 hour. The workshops are linked to the Northern Ireland Curriculum.

After the workshop, you'll receive our anti-litter education pack containing lessons plans, resources and a CD, and we can help you organise a community cleanup.

The workshops are open to Key Stage 3 pupils and will run in conjunction with an experienced workshop facilitator.

The workshops are closely linked to the Northern Ireland Curriculum and will provide pupils with an opportunity to:

    • develop an understanding of the impact litter can have on our city
    • investigate attitudes and behaviours towards litter and our environment
    • explore and respond to the views and feelings of others
    • explore issues related to moral character
    • develop as a contributor to society.

Spaces are limited to one session per school and will last for one hour. In order for us to facilitate the workshop, the class size should not exceed more than 30 pupils.
