PEACE IV Shared Spaces

Black Mountain Shared Spaces Project

  • Current status

A new £7 million shared community facility at Black Mountain opened in summer 2024.

The Black Mountain Shared Space (BMSS) project aims to create a welcoming, safe and accessible state-of-the-art building on land between Ballygomartin Road and Springfield Road.

The council-led project involved removing 30 metres of peace wall in the area to create a facility where cross community programming will be delivered. The facility has a mix of uses including community programming, sports, offices, meeting and informal gathering spaces for communities to mix and spend time together in an attractive, welcoming and neutral shared space.

The facility is operated by Black Mountain Shared Space. This organisation has operated since 2010. Since that time, they have gained support across political parties and the local community.

  • Funding

The project was funded by the European Union’s PEACE IV Programme, managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB) (link opens in new window). The PEACE IV Programme aims to create a more cohesive society through an increased provision of shared spaces and services.

Match-funding for the project was provided by the Department for Communities in Northern Ireland and the Department of Rural and Community Development in Ireland.

We also provided funding for the project.

BMSS is one of three major PEACE IV shared space projects in Belfast which were completed in 2024.
