About the Industrial Action
There may be some disruption to council services from Monday 21 to Sunday 27 March, as a result of a seven-day strike by Unite the Union.
This industrial action is impacting on local government services across Northern Ireland, as well as in England and Wales.
The majority of our services are expected to operate as normal, or with minimal disruption, but it is likely the strike will have an impact on some waste collection and street cleaning routes, as well as other frontline services and council venues.
We are working hard to minimise the impact on residents and businesses and will provide regular updates here, and also via our social media channels – Twitter (link opens in new window) and Facebook (link opens in new window)
Please check back to this page regularly for updates from Monday 21 March.
What is affected?
Last updated: 12 noon Monday 21 March 2022
Why is this strike taking place?
The industrial action is taking place across NI councils and other public sector organisations.
It is in relation to NJC pay, which is negotiated nationally on behalf of council and other local government organisations in England, Wales and Northern Ireland under joint union collective bargaining arrangements.
Belfast City Council then implements the outcome of these negotiations. It cannot enter into separate local negotiations on pay with Unite the Union.
