We’ve developed an aquatics strategy for the period 2019 – 2030 in partnership with Active Belfast Limited and GLL, the social enterprise who run the council’s 14 leisure centres under the ‘Better’ brand.
Our strategic vision is “to provide a top class aquatics service designed to promote social regeneration, tackle health inequalities, ensure affordable equitable access for all, maximise participation and enable people to reach their full potential.”
The success of our strategy will be measured against growth in the number of people using our pools alongside the total number of visits.
Within the strategy a range of initial baseline pool usage statistics are included, along with long term targets taking us up to 2030. By then we want to almost double pool usage to 1.5 million pool visits per year and almost double the number of Better Swim School members to 7,500.
Other specific targets are included within the strategy, while further performance and impact measures will be identified in our strategic action plan.
Our Leisure Transformation Programme is central to helping us achieve the ambitions of the Aquatics Strategy.
We’re investing £105 million over the next 10 years to improve our leisure centres, programmes and services in order to improve the health and wellbeing of our city.
