Carry Each Other is seven-metre-tall sculpture located on Springfield Road close to the entrance to the Innovation Factory.
It was sculpted by local visual artist Sara Cunningham-Bell, along with five small floor art pieces as part of the EU PEACE IV-funded Forth Meadow Community Greenway.
Carry Each Other aims to illustrate the community’s strength and the importance of supporting each other. It features an adult carrying a child on its shoulders, with the child in turn carrying a bird, representing vision and future plans.
The sculpture's design was influenced by many features of the local area including its old mills, housing estates, apple orchards and ring forts - including their concept as gateways to a fairy world.
During the development phase of the public art project, the sculptor also engaged with almost 270 primary school children from eight schools, young children from Sure Start and Early Years, community groups from Bog Meadows and local walking groups.
This video, recorded as work got underway installing the sculpture’s foundations, features Sara Cunningham-Bell describing the inspiration behind her creation.
As part of the public art project, almost 270 children from eight primary schools have taken part in a competition called ‘Nature in Belfast, Through Pattern’. A selection of their designs will inspire patterns in the final seven-metre-tall sculpture and the content of the floor art.
This table shows the schools that took part and the competition winners.
