Coronavirus update

Date: 18 March 2020

In response to coronavirus (COVID-19), Belfast City Council has streamlined resources to prioritise delivery of essential services to ratepayers, such as waste collections, burials and cremations.

Belfast City Council has closed venues, facilities and some services to the public including:

City Hall

Until the end of April 2020, there will be no weddings or civil partnership ceremonies at Belfast City Hall.

The registration of births, deaths, marriages and civil partnerships continues in City Hall. Access is by the back gate (Donegall Square South) only. You can only give notice for your marriage or civil partnership by post.

Belfast Castle and Malone House

Belfast Castle and Malone House are closed to the public until further notice. All functions booked at either venue between 17 March and 30 April 2020, will be postponed or cancelled. Belfast City Council is contacting customers who had bookings and will keep the situation under review.

Other closures include

Burials and cremations

Burials are taking place as normal. Belfast City Council asks graveside mourners to consider public health advice on social distancing.

Cremations are taking place as normal. While the chapel at Roselawn is still being used for ceremonies, Belfast City Council asks funeral directors and families to limit numbers in the chapel to 30 in line with the advice on social distancing.

Public toilets

Belfast City Council's public toilets are closed until further notice, to prioritise cleaning regimes and resources across council facilities.
