Belfast Zoo Comes To You

Date: 27 March 2020

Since you temporarily can’t visit the zoo, the zoo has decided to come to you!

Belfast Zoo may be temporarily shut, but our dedicated keepers and staff are still making sure that animal care is the top priority and all our animals’ needs are being met.

We hope that by providing as much positive news and updates about the animals as possible during this challenging period, it will help to lift community spirit and keep everyone informed whilst social distancing and isolating at home.

Follow the hashtag #BelfastZooComesToYou on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to enjoy all the latest updates from the zoo.

Alyn Cairns, zoo manager explained, “The animals still need to be cared for, so the keepers and staff are going about their jobs as usual however we are taking additional precautions. We have been busy capturing footage behind the scenes at the zoo and sharing this on our social media channels. We hope you enjoy watching the updates! I also want to take this opportunity to personally thank all of our keepers and staff for everything they are doing to help us continue to provide a high level of care at this difficult time.”

Alyn Cairns added

We understand that the closure has disrupted plans for our members and visitors and we would like to thank them for their patience and understanding. We will look forward to welcoming you back to the zoo once the precautionary period has passed.

Belfast City Council made the decision to close the zoo to the public in response to coronavirus, however the keepers and animal care staff remain on site to provide professional and dedicated care for the 120 species that call the zoo home. The zoo has social distancing measures for staff in place, following Public Health Agency guidelines. The keepers are all wearing face masks and gloves as recommended by the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums, and additional hygiene measures have been put in place.
