Advanced manufacturing and engineering
Belfast is steeped in a rich manufacturing and engineering heritage that is brimming with knowledge, skills, and experience. This sector contributes over £1.5 billion to the regional economy.
The city is a global leader in aerospace engineering and is home to Spirit Aerosystems. World renowned shipbuilders, Harland and Wolff, have built on over 150 years of marine manufacturing experience to support the needs of the maritime, offshore and renewable energy sectors. Innovative new companies such as Artemis technologies (link opens in new window) are building on this tradition.
Belfast is home to the NI Advanced Composites and Engineering Centre (NIACE) and the Centre for Competitiveness and the Polymer Processing Research Centre (PPRC) which brings together engineering companies and knowledge providers. This enables them to work on projects developing technical expertise and helping support innovation and product development.
Thanks to investment from the Belfast Region City Deal (link opens in new window) , The Advanced Manufacturing Innovation Centre (AMIC) (link opens in new window) will provide the springboard for manufacturing innovation in NI, providing a specialised environment for Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering sectors to access the very latest manufacturing technology and Industry 4.0 smart automation, supported by experienced, professional engineers and a state-of-the-art Factory of the Future.
The city has also set out 30 transformational programmes (link opens in new window) to transition Belfast to an inclusive, zero-emissions, climate-resilient economy within a generation.
